1. Lab 1: OS & Presentation

To study successfully, you should be familiar with your tools — meaning you either already have solid user knowledge or develop it by working through the following tasks.

Please complete section preparation before your first lab. You may use any resources that help you. The goal is not just to find the correct answers, but to understand the processes and internalize key terms and methods. Be prepared to explain any task in your own words. If you’re unsure about something, ask your questions in the lecture.

1.1 Preparation

Please complete the following tasks before your first lab session. Estimated time: 2 hours.

  1. Read the chapter on smart AI use and apply it throughout your studies.

  2. Read and understand os and markdown.

  3. How can you organize files on your computer so you don’t store everything on your desktop and can find things easily? Create a reasonable structure on your notebook and put your preparation of this lab into a markdown file lab1.md.

  4. Explain in your own words what the following terms mean and what they are used for: Browser, file manager, address bar, URL, HTTP, ZIP, file, directory, folder, cloud, and synchronization.

  5. How can you view hidden folders and files with specific extensions (e.g. .txt, .md) in your file manager (Finder, Explorer, etc.)?

  6. Install Visual Studio Code and add the extensions

  7. How do you copy and paste text and files on your system?

  8. What can you do with the command line (Terminal on macOS, PowerShell on Windows)? Use the command line to create folders, copy files, create files, delete files and folders.

  9. Create a .gitignore file.

  10. Subscribe to the my-hda calendar.

  11. Add the cancellation deadline for each exams to your personal calendar.

  12. Add the re-enrollment deadline to your calendar.

  13. Prepare a 2-minute presentation on an application of your choice that could be useful to fellow students.

    • Upload a one-page PDF of your presentation to Moodle 24 hours before the lab.
    • I expect you to deliver your presentation freely and confidently, without notes or a mobile in your hand.

  • We will address any questions you have.
  • You will present your applications.
